Kids need to be cool for school, says teachers' union

State schools in south-east Queensland should not be reliant on a network of fundraising volunteers and parents to ensure students do not swelter through next summer, the Queensland Teachers’ Union has said.
Kevin Bates, president of the QTU, said schools that needed airconditioning were turning to P&Cs (parents and citizens groups), which was to the government’s benefit.
“The longer [the airconditioning roll-out] is delayed, that’s when we see communities come up with their own solutions,” Mr Bates said.
“The cynic in me says there are communities across the south-east that have taken the decision to implement airconditioning in their schools rather than wait [for government].
“I think there is a need for some urgency around ensuring every state school gets access to reasonable climate control, and that is going to involve a very big investment for government.”
