Want an easy way of making an extra dollar or two this summer? Well, energy operators are planning on paying Victorians to turn down their air conditioners in a plan to dodge blackouts.
The $30 million trial will be rolled out by the Australian Energy Market Operatorand the Australian Renewable Energy Agency — with providers taking part to be revealed late next month, , the Herald Sun reports.
Under the planned initiative, customers would receive credits to their energy turning off their air con – even for just 30 minutes – and could save up to $500 each year on their household budgets.
“Consumers could be paid $25 a pop just to turn down their airconditioner and pool pump for a couple of hours,” the Australia Institute executive director Ben Oquist told the Herald Sun.
“This should be the focus of our energy debate, not what happens to an ageing coal plant in NSW in 2022.”
It will be reportedly up to energy retailers to promote the scheme to their customers, and set the discount rate.
