iSelect spokeswoman said “Every extra degree lower can increase energy consumption by around 10 per cent”.

SUMMER can get you hot under the collar, and so can a painfully large electricity bill.

In most cases you can blame your air conditioning, which experts say is responsible for about 40 per cent of household energy consumption.

Origin Energy says cooling costs can vary dramatically between households and states, but as a guide, a bedroom-sized 2.5kW unit will cost up to $86 to run over summer, a larger 5kW unit can cost up to $179 and a small ducted system may cost up to $445.

Origin spokesman Stuart Osbourne says simple strategies such as closing windows and curtains to keep the sun out, using a fan if the temperature is below 30 degrees, and using door and window seals can help cut costs.

“When you make the decision to turn on an airconditioner, first use the fan. That makes a big difference,” he says.

“Use inverter type airconditioners that are sized, installed and used in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations — they’ll use up to 40 per cent less energy than other airconditioners.”
