Researchers have found the temperature inside aged care facilities can have a dramatic impact on the health and wellbeing of residents, particularly those with dementia.
It's hoped the study will spur aged care providers to think more carefully about temperature regulation, and how aged care facilities are designed.
For residents in aged care centres, the touch of a button can be the difference between feeling comfortable and not.
The elderly's body temperature can be very, very different to ours, so if they do get too hot it can really affect their health and wellbeing, and of course, if they get cold, their body has to work too hard to stay warm.
A new study has found temperature can have a major impact on the wellbeing of residents. Many aged care providers have procedures in place to monitor temperature, with the studying reinforcing a sweet spot between 20 and 26 degrees.
It's extremely important that we maintain the facility within a comfort range, so residents are comfortable and especially people with dementia are less agitated.
Australia's aging population is growing rapidly, increasing the need for more aged care facilities in the community. Researchers hope the study will spur smarter design and operation of facilities. They're also encouraging authorities to introduce guidelines around temperature in aged care centers, to ensure residents are comfortable.
