So let's say our home or our office is now 50:50, or even predominantly female: if we turned the air con up from 22 degrees to about 23 or 24 this summer, we could save a substantial amount of money. Every degree on the thermostat can save about $100 on a typical household bill over the season.
For an office it's much more. About three in four homes now have air con and it can make up 40 per cent of the average summer energy bill.
This summer's going to be a hot one, according to the Bureau of Meteorology's forecast released last week.
"Daytime temperatures across November to January are likely to be warmer than average across parts of south-east, central, and western Australia, as well as along the northern coastline," the BoM said.
Add the extra consumption that comes with staying home so much in 2020 (winter bills were up between 10-30 per cent) and we're looking at record-high summer bills.
