HOW cool is this?
The shearers at Mark Mortimer’s place in central NSW don’t have to worry about being slowly roasted in the oven that is a shearing shed on a 40C-plus day.
They’ve got aircon.
Mark, who runs the Centreplus Merino Stud at Tullamore in central NSW, decided to put in airconditioning after a particularly sizzling shearing this time last year.
They had three to four days of 44-45C, which is not just uncomfortable but potentially dangerous in a job like shearing.
Mark said he had seen other wool growers install aircon and had initially scoffed at the idea, but then came to the realisation it was a no-brainer.
A comfortable shearer is a more productive one.
“And more comfortable for me as well,” he said.
The unit is a normal evaporative airconditioner, although it’s as big as you can get, with the water supplied from a nearby dam.
“The ducts are fully adjustable so the shearers can direct the cool air in any direction they like,” Mark said.
Blimey, once word gets out, every shearer will want one.
