Most of Queensland will swelter today as heatwave weather conditions sweep across the state, just days before Christmas.
In Brisbane, the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast the mercury to rise as high as 38C in sunny weather.
Forecasters have currently predicted there is an 80 percent chance the heat could cause a thunderstorm in the city late in the afternoon and into the evening.
Up to 8mm of rain could fall over Brisbane if the storms do pass over the Queensland capital, with wind gusts of up to 35km/h possibly leading into tomorrow when another, stronger deluge is expected.
Elsewhere around the state, the heatwave will see temperatures in central and regional areas rise even higher than Brisbane.
Conditions in both Mt Isa and Longreach are today expected to reach up to a maximum 43C with a 70 percent chance of a storm.
