Heatwave forecast for SA, total fire bans for much of state on Friday.

Total fire bans have been declared for large parts of the state today as the temperature soars ahead of a forecast prolonged heatwave.

The West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Mid North, Mount Lofty Ranges and the Lower South East will be subject to total fire bans today.

All six districts have been declared a severe fire danger.

Adelaide is expected to reach 39C today while Ceduna is forecast to reach a sweltering 44C.

At 7am in Adelaide it was 18C.

It will become windy in the west ahead of a gusty southwest to southerly change moving across the west and south during the afternoon and evening. Areas of raised dust could affect the west of the state.

The temperature and severe fire danger has forced the closure of the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden today.
