Aircon was top of the list of targets for people struggling to keep up with soaring power bills.

QUEENSLANDERS are switching off their airconditioners to save money just as the state prepares for a sweltering summer.

A survey by online research and ratings company Canstar Blue found that aircon was top of the list of targets for people struggling to keep up with soaring power bills.

About 43 per cent of respondents in the Sunshine State said they were cutting back on the use of cooling.

But that is raising alarm, with forecasters saying there is now a 70 per cent chance of an El Niño pattern developing, bringing hotter and drier conditions to Queensland and much of the rest of the country.

“It is worrying that, in Queensland particularly, people are turning off their airconditioners to save money,’’ Canstar Blue spokesman Simon Downes said.

“It is particularly concerning when you talk about elderly people or those with young children who could be vulnerable to problems from the heat there.”
